About Memphis Symphony Orchestra
Memphis Symphony Orchestra in Concert
You never can tell what the Memphis Symphony Orchestra may have in store for audiences. One day they bring their best to bear on a staple of the repertoire like a Beethoven symphony, and the next you find them tearing into something entirely more modern and less ubiquitous, like a piano concerto by Doreen Carwithen. Perhaps they’re tucking into George Gershwin’s immortal American in Paris or offering up a cello concerto by Sir Edward Elgar. One thing audiences can always count on at an MSO performance: when the musicians let loose on a piece, they seem to tap into a kind of telepathic connection, with all hands working as one. There are moments when it sounds more like a single, polytimbral instrument than an orchestra. That precision combines with a very visceral urgency to produce a unique experience in classical music.
Memphis Symphony Orchestra Background
The roots of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra go back to 1953 and the founding of chamber orchestra the Memphis Sinfonietta directed by Vincent DeFrank. Seven years later, that ensemble became forevermore known as the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, with cellist DeFrank remaining at the helm through the mid ‘80s. Originally, the orchestra’s HQ was the Ellis Auditorium, but in 2003 they took up residence in the city’s new Cannon Center for the Performing Arts. Different music directors have taken the helm over the years, with Robert Moody coming on board in 2016. Through every era, the MSO has presented the indispensable repertoire of the classical canon while doing everything possible to keep things fresh. Comprised of musicians from across the globe, the orchestra regularly offers community concerts and educational programs in schools in addition to the usual concert calendar, remaining very much in touch with Memphis and the city’s cultural life.
Such a wonderful night being entertained and educated!
The orchestra was superb and the conductor was outstanding. Nice to understand each part of the music. Narrator was very good too. Love orchestra unplugged series.
This was our third Symphony Unplugged concert. We are enjoying them very much. We are learning a lot about the history of the music and composers. We are looking forward to attending many more concerts.
Phenomenal experience learning from Memphis Symphony’s conductor all about Beethoven’s creation of his 5th symphony - how he first broke the rules of the classical symphony and finally hearing it in its entirety. It was just fabulous.
This was our first time attending a show in the Orchestra Unplugged series and my wife and I truly enjoyed it. The interaction between the conductor and the audience made it truly enjoyable. The venue (Halloran Center) it perfect for this type of small intimate event. Look forward to attending again soon.
Only the Hand of the Good Lord above & His Son can make such Music possible!! Words cannot describe such an event!! “Roll Over Beethoven & Tell Tchakowski the News”!! William Charles Berry!!
Robert Moody toured us through all the subtleties of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony both with the Orchestra's performance and with his encyclopedic knowledge of the music and the composer. Always a pleasure to listen to both the Robert and the orchestra!
The first half of the program was the conductor speaking informally about the Beethoven & the 5th. He had various sections & instruments of the orchestra play excerpts of the various motifs, melodies, variations & other points of interest. It was very well done. As a musician I already knew all of this. My non-musician wife enjoyed it & confirmed that it helped a great deal for her to know what to listen for & why. Then after a 20 minute intermission, the second half of the program was the full performance. The back wall of the stage had projected text lines relating to the important points, music cues mentioned in the first half. "The famous 4 note motif", "Exposition repeats", "Beethoven throws a curveball here with an unexpected oboe solo", etc. The performance was absolutely outstanding. Top notch musicians playing top notch music. The whole evening reminded me how amazing it is that almost 200 years after his death people still value his work enough to study it, practice it, perform his music, to have a sold out theatre of people buy tickets & show up on a Thursday night to hear a lecture about it & sit through the whole thing in wonder & appreciation.
Bob Moody's love for music is ever evident when he speaks to groups about a particular artist, piece, or genre. He brought Leonard Bernstein to life for an audience which laughed, cried and fell into the arms of Bernstein's amazing gifts to the world. If you have not been to an "unplugged"event with Bob and our wonderful orchestra, treat yourself! Bravo, Bob...as always!
Robert Moody is excellent - and our symphony is an organization we should all be proud of. Great pictures, film, stories about Leonard Bernstein. Everyone should go to an unplugged concert.
