Portland Trail Blazers History

The Trail Blazers joined the NBA in the 1970 expansion. Despite the presence of back-to-back rookies of the year Geoff Petrie and Sidney Wicks, they struggled, finishing last in their division five of their first six seasons. Then, in a remarkable reversal, they went 49-33 in the 1976–77 season, led by big men Bill Walton and Maurice Lucas, guards Lionel Hollins and Dave Twardzik, and head coach Jack Ramsay.

After defeating the Chicago Bulls, Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers in the first three rounds of the playoffs, they found themselves pitted against a powerhouse Philadelphia 76ers team led by Julius Erving, Caldwell Jones and George McGinnis in the NBA Finals. They dropped the first two games of the series but stormed back to win four straight to capture the franchise's only championship.

Title in hand, the Blazers would go on to make the playoffs 25 of the next 26 seasons. For 12 seasons starting in 1983, the catalyst was guard Clyde Drexler. In the 1989–90 season, with All-Star forward Buck Williams joining the team, the Blazers again made the NBA Finals, falling in five games to the Detroit Pistons. They posted a franchise-best 63-19 record the next season but succumbed to the Lakers in the Conference Finals. Another trip to the NBA Finals awaited in 1991–92, but the Blazers lost in six games to a Chicago Bulls team led by Michael Jordan.

The Blazers' forays into the playoffs continued through the 2002–03 season, with two of those trips, in 1998–99 and 1999–00, ending in losses in the conference finals. Beginning in the latter half of the 2000s, the team reached sustained regular season success behind notable talents like Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. Roy and Lillard both received the Rookie of the Year award for their respective first seasons.

  • Go NY Go

by Jojo on 3/15/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Was my first time seeing a Knicks game in person as a fan from Seattle which has no NBA team. Couldn’t have asked for a better ending sad Jalen Brunson didn’t get to play but I’m glad I got to experience this.

  • Family Birthday

    by C A Slam on 3/12/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Had a great time with family. Sons Birthday, grandkids, daughter and husband. Easy parking, got a headband, good game. Got into game, cheering, high fives, forgot the outside word. It was Blazer Time!!! Like the promotion games like Walton night. Flash back. Rip City.

  • Blazers vs. Lakers

by Angie on 2/23/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

Awesome but way to high up in the nose bleed. Maybe allowing people to upgrade would be so must beneficial. Paying $238.00 was excessive for s.r.o.

  • Great time at the Moda Centre!

by Dan on 2/23/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

On February 20, 2025, the Los Angeles Lakers secured a 110-102 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers at the Moda Center in Portland. LeBron James delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 40 points, including a pivotal eight-point run in the fourth quarter that solidified the win. At 40 years old, James continues to defy expectations, becoming the first NBA player to record multiple 40-point games at this age.

  • BB Game

by Big Bill on 2/4/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 3 out of 5

The team played as well as possible. The food and drink prices are insanely high!

  • Opportunity for entry

by Ann on 1/22/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 3 out of 5

We are long time trail blazer fans. We have been going to games for a very long time. I was disappointed with the entry process this time. First entrance we went to was completely empty. When we walked up they said it was for season ticket holders. Then when we got to the main entrance they had one bag line. Of course being a mom I had a bag. The bag I brought was 4x7, one inch too long. We waited for 20 minutes to get in and watched others that showed up after us get in without a wait. I get the importance on checking bags but the way this was done was frustrating. Instead of punishing people with bags (usually women or parents), let’s reward people who don’t. Make one express lane for people without bags. Making one line for people with bags is ridiculous. There was literal lines with no one in them, while we missed part of the game. They were paying people to stand there with no one in line while the bag line workers were overwhelmed with a huge line.

  • Game Day!

    by M. Pugh on 1/14/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Venue was a bit slow entering. Great view from the seats we purchased. Seats are not as comfortable as the seating at Ball Arena in Denver. Great experience overall

  • First time at Moda

by Firsttimer on 1/2/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

It was our first basketball game and our first time at Modo Arena. It was a lot of fun. The two things that need improvement were, their popcorn was extremely salty and unedible actually. I bought a can of beer and put it down in the drink holders, and it slipped right through and fell on the floor and spilt all over my seatmate. The drink/cupholders need to work better for cans and water bottles. They will slip through..

  • Excellent

Excellent. Loads of fun. Children were so happy. Friends and family were happy. Love to do it again

  • Portland Basketball Game

by Jill on 12/31/24Moda Center - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

My son and I came to watch the Portland Trailblazers basketball game . This was both of ours first time attending a game at The Moda Center. Since we no longer have the Seattle Sonic’s in Washington the closest NBA team is in Portland. We came to celebrate his 35th Birthday. We were pleasantly surprised that the seats we had were very good. The pre game performance was very nice. I would definitely come going to another game

  • Expensive

by TheSharpShooter on 12/29/24Moda Center - PortlandRating: 1 out of 5

Party of 4, $80 per ticket one rounds of drinks was $60 Round of food was $80 2 hats for $50 2 icreams $20 Parking $35 $565 If I’m being honest I don’t really feel the value here. I would have rather taken all of my extended family out for a nice dinner and still had money left over. Love the blazers, but the cost does not match the entertainment value. Team has been a loosing product for the past 5 seasons, yet the prices seem to increase each year. I will not be purchasing tickets again until the Blazers are willing to lower their prices to match the product on the floor. Rebuilding teams deserve rebuild price point.

  • Great time!

by Tw on 12/29/24Moda Center - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

We took 16 family members from out of town to the game. It was a blast!!

  • Battle with the Spurs

by SDCHESS on 12/16/24Moda Center - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Definitely go see a Blazers game from the lower bowl. Been a fan since the 70’s. This team has the components to be great one day. I experienced one championship. Bring Portland another!

  • Much improved experience.

by Riley on 12/2/24Moda Center - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

I’ve been going to blazer games for my entire life (24 years) and this might be the best game day experience I’ve ever had. I became extremely dissatisfied with the game day experience over the last few years one of which I was a season ticket holder. There was no value outside of the basketball game itself and when your team is not good that makes it not even worth going. No fun events, give aways, and ways to participate but that started to change this season. They’re giving out stuff at games, the lights make an excellent addition to the pregame, they are cutting the things that don’t work (like trying to get the fans to say our house), they had fun on court competitions, the hot dogs from heaven copy with donuts is genius. If management keeps this up I’ll definitely be more excited to be there instead of just watching at home. My only gripe is prices are still to high by about 20% for a team that wont even make the playoffs.

  • Mom's 1st game

by Ben on 11/20/24Moda Center - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

My mom's been a Blazers fan for over 30, but had never been to a game. Just being her 1st game made it memorable. But there were so many things that made it an amazing time. Getting her "1st Game"certificate, having Dillon Gabriel there (we're huge Ducks fans), and the Trail Blazers winning in dramatic fashion. What more could you ask for a 1st game?

  • Unexpected Talent Show

by Big Bill on 11/15/24Moda Center - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

I was very surprised that the Blazers won a game in which they were a considerable underdog. They got a couple of lucky 3s, but on the whole, they played like a good BB team.

  • Go Blazers.

by Adams on 11/15/24Moda Center - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Was a great game. Always a great time at the Moda Center.

  • Really enjoyed the game and had good seats

by KenO on 11/15/24Moda Center - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Blazers vs Timberwolves game. Nice facility, nice atmosphere and good competition. I was just passing through Portland and had never been to a game at Moda Center and came away impressed and hope I can see more Blazers games there in the future.

  • Minor League

by Big Bill on 11/5/24Moda Center - PortlandRating: 1 out of 5

Same comment! The Blazers are a G-League team playing with the Big Boys!

  • Great Experience!

by Josef Baqer on 10/28/24Rating: 5 out of 5

I love everything and it is very organized! Only one comment, we were sitting Courtside and at least you should get at minimum free water but we still had to pay. But overall It was a great experience.
