Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Live in Concert

Jason Isbell was born into a musical family in Green Hill, Alabama, in 1979. His grandfather and uncle taught him to play various musical instruments, and the young musician started playing the mandolin when he was just 6. Destined for a life in the spotlight, he joined the Drive-By Truckers in 2001 at the age of 22. Isbell was a member of the Drive-By Truckers for six years before cutting out for a solo career. He released his first solo album, Sirens of the Ditch, in 2007. Some of his most notable work began when he assembled a group of musicians that would become known as The 400 Unit. The group consists of Sadler Vaden  of Drivin' N Cryin' on guitar, Jimbo Hart on bass, Derry deBorja on keyboards and accordion, Chad Gamble on drums and Isbell's wife Amanda Shires on fiddle. The 400 Unit is playfully named after the psychiatric ward of Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama. Isbell and the band's first collaboration resulted in the release of the self-titled album Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit in 2009. In 2011, the collaboration continued with the release of Here We Rest. The track "Alabama Pines" was named Song of the Year at the 2012 Americana Music Awards. The Nashville Sound was released in 2017, winning the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album, with Isbell winning an additional Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song. In 2020, the group released Reunions, with the song "Be Afraid" hitting No. 5 on the Adult Alternative Songs chart. During the November 2020 election, Isbell announced he would make a charity album if Joe Biden won the state of Georgia. When this came to pass, Isbell worked to release the cover album Georgia Blue the following year. The album was a collaboration by various artists, and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit contributed a cover of the Metallica song "Sad But True." Isbell has won four Grammy Awards between 2001 and 2007.

  • Slightly rainy

by Steve on 5/21/25Outlaw Field at the Idaho Botanical Garden - BoiseRating: 5 out of 5

Jason Isbell is a great musician and has an outstanding band. The weather wasn’t the greatest, but the music made up for it. Outlaw Field is one of our favorite venues. It was good to hear some of Jason’s older songs too.

  • Great show in the rain!

by GBann on 5/20/25Outlaw Field at the Idaho Botanical Garden - BoiseRating: 5 out of 5

Jason Isbell is an amazingly talented singer, songwriter, and showman. I don’t think there’s a better lyricist out there right now and he applies the words beautifully to well crafted tunes. Lousy weather that night, but he and the 400 Unit made it fun. A great band playing great songs in an awesome venue made for a great concert, even in the rain!

  • Awesome concert, food and drink vendors need improvement

by Kathy ML on 5/20/25Outlaw Field at the Idaho Botanical Garden - BoiseRating: 4 out of 5

Anything at Outlaw field/ Botanical Garden is an amazing environment. The weather was less than cooperative with rain and cool temperatures, but we were glad to be present for Jason Is bell and his talented musicians. The food and drink vendors definitely need some improvement. Firstly, there were only 3 food choices, and ice cream. How about coffee, tea, desserts? What about non alcoholic drink choices? How about insisting that folks sit in a particular area. We were far enough back from the standing and dancing people....and then others started standing and blocking our view. How about more areas with sun / rain protection.... Especially since umbrellas are not allowed.

  • The sound crew is hard of hearing.

by Concert Lover on 5/20/25Outlaw Field at the Idaho Botanical Garden - BoiseRating: 1 out of 5

The base levels were way too high. They drowned out Jason's vocals and guitar. I don't like the brain in my head bouncing to the beat, as well as my chest. Very disappointing.

  • rain or shine, Isbell always shines

by Lucky Luke on 5/20/25Outlaw Field at the Idaho Botanical Garden - BoiseRating: 5 out of 5

Rain could not keep the crowd at bay and didn't dampen the show one bit. Great set list giving everyone a little something old, even older and new. JI and Sadler Vaden (and the whole band) put on a helluva show and always see them when they are in the area.

  • Good concert but difficult to stand

by Susan on 5/20/25Outlaw Field at the Idaho Botanical Garden - BoiseRating: 3 out of 5

The concert was great. However, I should have checked the policies. I am 82 years old and it was difficult for me to stand for 2 hours. My son in law suggested that I get myself certified as handicapped so that I could use a regular chair and sit in the handicapped section.

  • Great Show but poor view.

by Banjo Kid on 5/20/25Outlaw Field at the Idaho Botanical Garden - BoiseRating: 5 out of 5

Jason put on a great show - no question about that. However, once people started standing in front of the stage our view blocked entirely.

  • Best song writer in America

by Fred on 5/17/25Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit put on a phenomenal show at the Orpheum Theater in Vancouver BC on 5/13/25. My wife and I travelled from Seattle to see this show. We were hoping he would perform some of his solo work on his latest album "Foxes in the Snow", and we weren't disappointed! In fact, the 400 Unit joined him to rock out on 6 of his latest songs originally recorded as solo acoustic performances. Such great story telling and music. Jason and Sadler can really tear it up during the guitar solos too! Isbell is in my opinion one of the best (if not the best) singer/song writers in America. PS. We bumped into Jason the day after the show crossing the alley behind our hotel. Great and humble to his fans.

  • Superior show

by Hans on 5/17/25Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Definitely one of the best, if not THE best show in Vancouver this year! Unbeatable their mix of 4 - 5 minute songs both acoustic and plugged-in, and extended versions of well-known songs with the guitar lead moving from Jason to Sadler and the other way around. Good idea to not allow filming and taking pics - no distraction from what's going on on stage. Just terrific!

  • Too good!!!

I could have watched Jason and the 400 Unit play for another 2 hours, and again the next day! Too Good!! What a treat!!
